What is now the Morganton Church of Christ began in Valdese before 1966 with the Burns, Brown and Hester families. In July 1966, the Broad Street congregation in Cookeville, Tennessee began assisting with the support of the work here. At that time, Harold Cutler began preaching for the church. He left in August 1969. Sam Norman and others shared preaching responsibilities after that for a year, until Jerry Senn came to work full-time with the congregation in August of 1970.
In November 1970, the church began renting a small building on Erwin Street. A month later in December 1970, Raymond Climer, with support from a number of congregations in South Carolina, joined Jerry Senn in the full-time ministry of the church here.
Moving forward in its vision for a well-established work in Morganton, the church bought three adjoining lots beside Kirksey's Funeral Home. Bonds were issued with a seventeen-year maturity, work started on clearing the lots, and construction finally began. On April 1, 1973, the first service was held in the new building with the official dedication on May 6, 1973.
That was a transitional year, as Jerry Senn and Raymond Climer moved on, and in December, Houston Conley came and preached for a year until December 1974. He was followed by Randall Chapman (February 1975 to October 1976). Benny Burns added some stability being from one of the original families that constituted the congregation and served the church here as its preacher from January 1977 to May 1983, the longest tenure of a preacher up till that time. In addition, in 1982 the congregation became self-supporting after sixteen years support from the Broad Street church in Cookeville.
Mark Hudson came to work with the church in October 1983 and continued as the preacher through the end of 1990. Also during this period in 1987 the bond debt was retired three years early with a special contribution. In January 1991 Tony Forrest became the preacher and served until June of 2001.
Jeff Lovitt came to work with the congregation in July of 2001 and is currently the full-time minister.
The Morganton congregation, once needing mission support itself, now helps support other mission efforts: Cesar Torres (Lima, Peru), Robert Lewis (Chemnitz, Germany) and Craig Phillips (Bombay, India).
Our prayer is for a bright history – yet to be written – of service to Christ here in Morganton, North Carolina and throughout the world.
